The outer layer must be waterproof and able to repel the wind. It also helps if it has pockets or areas to put
items like a compass and flashlight. These 3 layers are not only for winter backpacking. You must always dress in
layers because you'll be the most protected from any stormy weather and you may find, particularly the inner
absorbent layer, is even beneficial in the hotter weather.
Layering your backpacking clothing shouldn't be a challenge. You need to not lose mobility and it should never
be uncomfortable. Clothing is meant for protection and that is how you must look at it. Select items that are comfy
and serve a purpose. Be certain to think about keeping the things thin. Also remember to consider the 3 layers you
must always have.
